Woman’s first lung transplant by robot

Cheryl Maherker was the recipient of the world’s first fully robotic double lung transplant on October 22 at NYU Langone Health Center in Manhattan.

Mehrkar, a physician, had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for a decade which became more severe when she was exposed to Covid. He spent years searching for a solution before he qualified for the procedure.

This technique builds on minimally invasive surgeries and aims to shorten hospital stays as well as speed up recovery times.

Almost a month after the surgery, Mehrkar is now days away from being released from the hospital.
