Leah Figer: And with me in the studio is Wired reporter Vittoria Elliott. Hey, Tori.
Victoria Elliott: Hey, Leah.
Leah Figer: How are you guys? What social media platforms are you currently on?
Victoria Elliott: A violent question if I’m honest. I’m on Blusky
Leah Figer: yes
Victoria Elliott: Oh yes.
Leah Figer: ok
Victoria Elliott: I’m just walking around and people are following me. This is the lowest lift of any platform I’ve had to engage with in a while.
Leah Figer: So you just like attention?
Victoria Elliott: I just love the attention. I love getting the little pings on my phone every day.
Leah Figer: This is what Twitter used to be for a lot of people. David, you’re on Blusky too, right?
David Gilbert: I believe. I’m following you, Leah, after all.
Leah Figer: I know I had to beg for it. It was disturbing.
David Gilbert: I’m very busy though. I have a lot of new followers to check out and check out.
Leah Figer: To participate in
David Gilbert: yes
Leah Figer: So rude. So what’s going on? Do you guys like him more than X right now? There’s just been this massive exodus that I feel like not just journalists, but people with leanings across the board. What are the reasons for this?
David Gilbert: At least for me it’s less motivating. It is less toxic. It’s easy to just sit there and scroll for a while and not be triggered by something stupid that X did recently. And I think I’m happier spending time there. Engagement seems more natural, authentic. There’s just a conversation going on instead of people yelling all the time. And I don’t know, it’s very early days and I think it could potentially be great, but it could also potentially be terrible because it’s the Internet.
Leah Figer: The CEO says they’re getting like a million users a day. This is a wild estate.
Victoria Elliott: yes I mean, so I agree with David, the user experience is better. I mean, even though it’s a little slow to load because they’re getting so many people so quickly, it’s a platform that you feel is designed not to take up all of your attention. has gone So if you feel like X, sometimes you’ll find a really interesting post and then the website will automatically load and then it’ll push you to the top, so you have to keep scrolling. . And Blusky doesn’t work that way. It feels like the old social media where you’re like, I’m here to see what I want to see, but it’s not designed in a way that makes me feel like the end goal is just me more. have more to lose than Time on this website as much as possible.
