On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at encouraging the US government and consumers to buy plastic drinking straw, which prompted his efforts by his predecessor to gradually get rid of plastic materials with a single use and waste treatment.
“We go back to the plastic straw,” Trump told reporters at the White House, saying: “We return to the plastic straw,” saying that the paper straw “does not work.”
“I don’t think the plastic will affect the shark a lot, as they make their way across the ocean,” Trump said.
It says the United States government “stops buying straw and ensuring that it is not provided in federal buildings.” He also orders the government to reach a national strategy to end the use of paper straw within 45 days.
Trump’s Democratic ancestor, President Joe Biden, suggested environmental measures to the decrease in the consumption of non -decomposing plastic materials, which pollution of ecosystems and pollution of food supplies. His administration also supported a global treaty aimed at setting the maximum plastic production.
On Monday, the executive was part of the wider weakening of environmental obligations by Trump, who in one of his first term of his second term removed the United States from the Climate Agreement in Paris for the second time.
Trump also canceled the Biden administration policy to end the use of all plastic products with a single use on federal lands by 2032.
Watch | Why is it difficult to finish plastic pollution:
Thousands of delegates are in Ottawa trying to produce a historical treaty to end plastic pollution, but the road to get there is a powerful obstacle. Susan Ormeston from CBC is looking for why it is difficult to curb the problem and what will require the world to agree on a plan.
Dozens of countries have imposed a ban on different types of plastic materials with a single use, which are mainly produced through petrochemicals and used to make shopping bags, bottles and other elimination elements.
The Canada government has included toxic plastic elements in order to ban the sale of some plastic elements, including plastic exit bags, table tools, food service tools, noise and straw sticks. However, a number of major companies were stabbed in the plastic industry in the list in court. In 2023, the judge of the Federal Court spent “unreasonable and unconstitutional.” The federal government appeals the ruling.
He watches | The Federal Court transmits the plastic ban for one use:
Many plastic materials with a single use were to be banned throughout the country in December, but the Federal Court ruled unconstitutional on Thursday. But it may not mean a return to plastic bags and straw.
If no new controls are introduced, it is expected that the amount of plastic waste that was thrown into the environment will increase from 81 million tons in 2020 to 119 million tons in 2040, according to OECD Research last year.
Negotiations have collapsed on a global treaty to control plastic pollution last year, as the main countries producing plastic refrain from adhering to binding output covers.
The negotiations are scheduled to resume this year, but Aleksandar Rankovic, the director of the joint initiative, an environmental thinking center, said that he will not be surprised if Washington withdrew now from the talks.
He said, “With the position of the new management supporting oil and gas, one can expect the United States to meet countries such as Russia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and oppose the adoption of global goals to reduce plastic production,” he said.
