Trump says he is considering imposing a 10% tariff on China starting February 1

President Donald Trump said his team is discussing imposing a 10% tariff on China, and that the tariffs could go into effect as early as February 1.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday evening, the president said: “We are talking about a 10% tariff on China based on the fact that they are sending fentanyl to Mexico and Canada.”

“Maybe February 1 is the date we are looking forward to,” he added.

Trump also indicated on Tuesday that his team is talking about “about 25%” tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

He made similar comments the day before, suggesting that tariffs on Mexico and Canada could be imposed as early as February.

“We are considering imposing a 25% (fee) on Mexico and Canada, because they allow a large number of people” to cross the border, he said on Monday.

While campaigning in 2024, Trump threatened to impose tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese goods. Last November, Trump called for imposing an “additional 10% tariff” on China, according to his post. On his social media platform Truth Social.
