Big movie and television fans will remember the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that lasted through most of 2023, shutting down productions across the country. What you might not realize, unless you’ve been tapped into trade publications, is that Netflix took the strikes as an opportunity to pitch a ton of foreign productions, meaning streamers now Loaded to the gills with new and exciting content from the studios. For those who haven’t heard. Nowhere. On Netflix, the film is a powerful dramatic thriller with an unusually limited cast, reminiscent of the classic 2000 adventure film. The film takes place in a dystopian future that has seen some kind of global crisis plunge half of Europe into a dangerous wasteland run by fascists, leaving a couple scrambling for the health and safety of their unborn child. Afraid of.
Once they make it aboard the cargo ship, however, Mia and Nico realize their struggle has only just begun. At first, the pair are separated as corrupt military personnel smash the crates and attempt to kill several stowaways.
Later, a violent storm across the eastern Atlantic causes the boat to capsize, sending a random assortment of items out into the sea. As the narrative of Nowhere. In its terrifying climax on Netflix, Mia must learn to survive using makeshift tools and items inside her crate, all while being pushed to the center by ocean waves.
Mixed reactions
Nowhere. The original premiered on Netflix in September 2023, and quickly received a mixed response from critics. Today, the film holds a 69 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with some viewers saying that the writing and directorial choices are not strong enough to sustain engagement with the film. Despite these reviews, critics seem to unanimously agree that Ana Castillo’s lead performance as Mia is the high-water mark, as much of the narrative hinges on her harrowing journey through the unknown undersea.

Personally, I had never heard of it Nowhere. Until recently, when I was randomly scrolling through Netflix originals looking for something new and interesting. I’d say the critics mostly got it right, as Mia’s journey is the most interesting part of the film by a long shot, though I do wish we could have seen the ruined remains of Spain in the first act. Any way you slice it, the film is a fun and engaging watch, and at just 109 minutes in runtime, it never feels like it wears out its welcome.
