Suspect in custody after NYC stabbing kills 3: Police

A knife-wielding suspect with multiple arrests in the past killed two men and seriously injured a woman Monday in unprovoked attacks in New York City, authorities said.

The woman, who was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, was listed in critical condition before succumbing to her injuries. The New York Post It was reported late Monday.

The alleged attacker, Ramon Rivera, is a 51-year-old homeless man with eight arrests. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said he was caught after a good Samaritan cab driver alerted authorities.

“Today we have three innocent New Yorkers, thinking about their lives, who were victims of a terrible, terrible attack,” he said.

Mayor Eric Adams said at a news briefing that investigators have no other suspects.

Kenney said the stabbing began around 8:20 a.m., when a 36-year-old man was standing in front of a construction site where he was working on 19th Street and was stabbed in the stomach.

The suspect fled, and the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

About two hours later on the East River near FDR Drive at 30th Street, a 68-year-old man who was fishing was stabbed multiple times in the body, Kenney said. The victim also died in the same hospital.

Half an hour later, a woman, 36, was stabbed multiple times at East 42nd Street and First Avenue near the United Nations building.

“Up until now, these attacks seemed unprovoked,” Kenney said. “That he just came up to them and started attacking them with knives.”

Shortly after the third attack, a witness near 46th Street told police that a possible robbery suspect was walking around the area. Authorities said the witness was a taxi driver who saw the third attack, believing it to be a robbery rather than a stabbing.

Rivera was taken into police custody. Police said he was found with large kitchen knives covered in blood. His clothes were also covered in blood, police said.

“I just heard a commotion. Stepped outside and heard what people were saying and reacted,” the officer who took the suspect into custody told reporters.

The accused was taken to the police station and questioned. Adams said Monday’s attacks are “a clear, stark example of a criminal justice system, a mental health system that continues to fail New Yorkers.”
