Since her first appearance in Action Comics #252 in the late fifties, Supergirl has undergone nearly 30 costume changes. Mostly, she’s stuck with the trademark blue and red, but every now and then, she switches up her color palette, like recently when she went completely red for a new one. The red lantern.

Sometimes daring, sometimes risqué, sometimes boring, sometimes oh-so-80s, Supergirl never disappoints. Here’s a look at some of the riskiest, craziest, funniest superhero fashion choices from DC’s mightiest female hero.

Supergirl In Adventure Comics #409

This 1971 Supergirl costume featured a bold and, for the time, even shocking design that left both sides of her body completely bare of fabric. Her costume was part of a series in which fans submitted their own designs to DC Comics.

It is not quite ready for war. It’s hard to imagine that she would go toe-to-toe with the devil girl and keep everything PG in her outfit. It’s also out of character for Kara Zor-El, who isn’t usually drawn to overt sexuality in her outfits. This Supergirl costume belongs to someone else like Poison Ivy, but she probably deserves props for daring.

Inside Supergirl Adventure Comics #410

There were three different variations of the Supergirl Adventure Comics #410 costume. For simplicity’s sake, we’re grouping them here as a look. It has a fairly deep V-neck and is the only time Supergirl comes close to showing décolletage. After this design, all future Supergirl costumes avoided V-necks.

One of the greatest versions of Supergirl was drawn by the now-deceased artist Michael Turner. Its design features the bare midriff that first debuted on it. Superman: The Animated series but is drawn more realistically and, in some ways, skimpier.

This is Compatible with all of Turner’s female character sketches. This particular issue was also notable for retelling Supergirl’s origins in the DC Comics universe.

In this case her dress is being used more as a draping than an actual dress. So, maybe it shouldn’t count. Still, this is Supergirl’s most revealing cover design. Like the Superman/Batman #13 design, this one was drawn by the late Michael Turner.

The book itself is a rare find, having only been published in German as the cover of the German edition of Superman/Batman #8. This book costs over $300 and you won’t find a copy available on eBay very often.
