Less deal has been in the music business for a long time, but still faced some surprises while making his first solo album.
Choosing cover art for No one loves you more Breeders presented the frontwoman, 63, with a host of options she had never considered before — for example, putting her own face on the record.
“Someone at the label said, ‘You know, you could be on this,'” Dale told Exclusively. We weekly Ahead of her album’s release on Friday, November 22. “And I was like, ‘I could be on that, couldn’t I?’ Why not? I have no better idea.”
The final product features his guitar, a couple of amps and a flamingo with a fake sea deal. The artist said she still feels “a little weird” seeing herself in the album’s advertisements.
“I think it’s quite subversive, look at me on the album cover, it’s funny – and then they start talking about promo,” he recalled. “I’m thinking my face is going to be on a vinyl record. You buy it at the store, it’s going to be fine. But no. … It’s like, ‘Oh, no, that’s my mom—in the face, and it’s not.’ Now onto a product ad.’ And it was a big surprise for me.”
After nearly 40 years in the music industry, Dale is used to being in the spotlight – but he’s rarely faced it alone. Aside from several solo singles released in the early 2010s, she’s always been part of a band — the Pixies, the Breeders, the Amps — so making a full-length Cum Deal record was a new adventure. to bring No one loves you more Throughout his life, Dale worked with many longtime colleagues, including his twin sister, Kelly Daleand his breeders bandmates Jim McPherson. Still, he said it was a thrill to be fully in the driver’s seat this time.
“I remember working with him. Order [Lopez] On Breeders’ Stuff. … We’ll go over it again and again, like weeks and weeks coming up with ideas and stuff,” Kim explained. “In this case, the song. [would be] A lot has happened … and I probably got a demo or pretty much knew what I wanted.
However, her sister had to do a little more legwork. “Kelly had to do the band-type stuff where she came in and I wasn’t going to let her go until she threw out all kinds of different guitar ideas for the song I was working on. ” Kim recalled. “It’s like, ‘Wait, don’t leave. Just wait a minute. Come here! I need something for this section right now.'”
Another less frequently worked companion. No one loves you more is a legendary producer Steve Albiniwho died in May at the age of 61. The duo’s first collaborative project was the 1988 Pixies album. Pink Surferand they later joined forces for several Breeders LPs.
“He’s known for that punk guy. [energy] And he definitely was,” Kim said. “But one thing that really struck me, one day we were doing a song called ‘Summerland,’ and in that song, like, an orchestra. is … He was very respectful. He was very communicative. Every headphone box works. The mics are already setup. There are seats for everyone. Of course all the machines are on point, because of course they are. Everyone knew what they were doing. It was going so well, and it’s like, ‘God, he’s good at it.’ I don’t see it that much. And for me it was really inspiring.
Next year, Kim will go on a supporting solo tour. No one loves you morewith the hope of recreating the album as accurately as possible on stage.
“I want the trombones and trumpets to be there,” she explained us. “I think it makes the song better!”
