Callum Smith will finally return to action in two weeks’ time on November 30 against a yet-to-be-determined opponent at Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena.
The 34-year-old former WBA super middleweight champion Smith (29-2, 24 KOs) will fight on the undercard of Sunny Edwards vs. Gulal Yafai, which is not looking good for him.
It’s been a steep fall for Smith from being a main event fighter to fighting on the undercard of the flyweight scrap between Edwards and Yafai, but it reflects where his career is at.
Tune-ups are not helping the column.
Smith has lost two of his last four fights since 2020, and the two tune-up fights Matchroom gave him in the midst of his first loss didn’t help. Promoter Eddie Hearn may have also skipped the tune-up and immediately signed Smith to Wolves.
The flaws in Smith’s game that John Ryder and Canelo Alvarez showed were still present when he faced unified 175-lb champion Artur Beterbeef on January 13.
Fans aren’t eager to see the hulking 6’3″ Smith return to the ring on November 30, as many of them have 100% given up on him, and his career as a sinking ship. Seen as what cannot be saved from drowning. . Promoter Eddie Hearn shouldn’t waste too many fights on rebuilding with Smith like he did with Anthony Joshua because it won’t help. It’s as good as it gets for him, and he won’t get better.
Ideal for Hearn to match Calum with a tomato can on November 30th and then fight the winner of the February 1st fight between David Benavidez and WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion David Morrell. Will be.
If Smith can fight the winner of that fight at the event of the Riyaz season, it will be a nice payday and he has a chance to get lucky and win. A victory for Smith over the winner of that fight would set him up for a lucrative fight at 175 for a undisputed fight against either Bitterbeef or Buell.
