The three services above are our top choices for the best DNA test. They weren’t the only ones we tested. Here are a few additional options, none of which outperform 23andMe, Ancestry, or FamilyTreeDNA tests in any way.
MyHeritage
MyHeritage offers a free tier of service that includes some basic family tree building and access to excerpts of historical documents. It also includes a report on your genetic makeup across the company’s 42 supported ethnicities, identifying relatives and connections with them where possible.
We found MyHeritage’s user interface to be much less intuitive and more difficult to navigate than others. It’s one of the few companies that offers a comprehensive research database of historical documents, DNA analysis and health screening, but we found the integration between them to be a bit clumsy. In 2018, MyHeritage committed a security breach, exposing the email addresses and hashed passwords of more than 92 million users.
Living DNA
LivingDNA segments its offerings differently than others. Your Ancestry DNA Kit provides an overview of your ancestors in 150 geographic regions, information about maternal and paternal haplogroups, and access to the company’s genetic matching tool. The $129 “Wellness Package” includes reports on your physiological compatibility with vitamins, foods, and exercise. The $225 luxury and pedigree gives you all that.
Although the data is not sold or shared, the company has very Limited family matching database; A company representative declined to give me an exact number but said it has fewer than 1 million profiles. If you’re looking to get to know your relatives and make connections with them, there are better options on the market.
Whole genome sequencing
There are many companies, including Complete genomes, Veritas Genetics, Nebula genomics and Dante Laboratoriesit can sequence all of your DNA – otherwise known as your genome. This level of analysis is suitable for advanced users only. Not only are they expensive—these tests can cost thousands of dollars in some cases—but they require a sophisticated understanding of both genetics and a range of technical tools needed to explore and interpret your results. For most people, the main rationale for whole genome sequencing is to delve deeper into your genetic health prognosis. You can learn about your personal risk factors for diseases, drug allergies, and your carrier status. That is, what you might pass on to your children.
