A woman faces a felony charge for allegedly beating an elementary school principal

A sideline brawl at an elementary school basketball game in Louisiana last week ended with two women jailed and one in the hospital.

On Monday, January 13, the principal of Iberville Elementary School — located in Plaquemines, a city in Iberville Parish — was watching students play basketball after school hours when she spotted two young children wandering onto the court, according to a local outlet. WAFB.

To keep the children out of harm’s way, the principal moved from her corner of the school gym and kept them away from active play — an action she repeated at least twice, according to the outlet, which obtained surveillance footage of the incident.

In a clip from one case, a school principal can be seen lifting a young student off the court while directing another to do the same.

She continued her efforts to keep the children away from the event, and reported a mother walking by who had “three children” with her, as well as a friend with her, Plaquemines Police Chief Steven Ingolio said. WAFB.

The principal then ordered the mother, who has since been identified by police as Alicia Parker, to “hold her.” [her] “Get the kids off the basketball court” because it “disrupts the entire game,” the police chief said. Parker, 33, “was obviously offended by that,” Ingulio told WAFB, foreshadowing her reaction, which was captured on surveillance footage.

In the playground footage, the mother — who was holding one child’s hand and had another child on her hip — appears visibly upset, stepping forward and getting very close to the principal. The principal then raises his hand on Parker, who then immediately appears to hit the teacher in the head.

“the [principal] She raises her hand to move it away from her and [Parker] “I just punched her and knocked her out of her chair,” Ingolio said of the altercation.

An Iberville Police Department deputy was present at the match and immediately intervened to break up the dispute between the two women, according to WAFB. But Parker’s punch left a mark on the manager.

Police said she suffered a “broken lip” and a head injury and was taken to the hospital, according to WAFB. She was able to return to work the next day, according to another outlet in Louisiana. WBRZ.

“She’s OK now, but it was a very brutal attack,” Ingulio said of the teacher.

Parker turned herself in the next day, and Plaquemine police arrested her and charged her with resisting officers, disturbing the peace and battery on a school teacher, a felony, according to WAFB and Plaquemines Post South.

Plaquemine Police and the Iberville Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, January 19.
