WATCH THIS: Two New York State Patrol cars smashed by alleged drunk driver

Two New York State Police vehicles were hit by an alleged drunk driver while they were investigating another drunken driving incident.

According to a release According to the New York State Police, on Saturday, November 16 at approximately 12 p.m., two troopers were struck by a gray 2004 Toyota RAV4 on the Parkway in Babylon, New York.

The crash occurred as two troopers were investigating a 2018 GMC Arcadia that crashed into a Department of Transportation light tower in a work zone.

Authorities said that while they were investigating the second incident, 72-year-old Jakeran Ramrukam rammed the patrol cars.

The first car rammed into the second car, police said.

State police photos show cruisers and SUVs heavily damaged after the crash.

All the drivers were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for minor injuries, police said. (New York State Police)

Army personnel rushed to help the civilians involved in the accident, only to realize that they themselves had sustained minor injuries.

“It was only after their adrenaline wore off that they recognized their injuries,” the release said.

All parties were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Jakaran Ramrookum, 73, was driving a gray 2004 Toyota RAV4 and was charged with driving under the influence (unclassified misdemeanor). (New York State Police)

Ramarokam was charged with driving under the influence (an unclassified misdemeanor).

New York State Police called the incident “frustrating” and reminded drivers not to drive under the influence.

“This is a serious and tragic situation. It is disheartening when people make choices that put the lives of others at risk, especially those working to improve our roadways and protect the public. This incident serves as a reminder to drivers not only to drive cautiously, but to be aware of their surroundings, slow down and move forward,” the release said.
