Night-wetting and meditation – BionicOldGuy

I, and many friends my age, can have trouble falling asleep at night, especially when waking up in the middle of the night. This can be exacerbated by “nocturia,” or having to get up to urinate one or more times a night, which is common among older adults. This can lead to problems getting back to sleep, especially if you have a “busy mind” and don’t know how to turn it off.

I got advice on how to fix this problem from a dear friend years ago and it worked well for me, and I try to pass it on to friends who have this problem. It is useful to know how to meditate. You don’t have to be very good at it, you can be a beginner (I’ve given beginner’s advice about meditation here). Most people with “busy minds” find that their minds do not want to cooperate in meditation, but rather want to wander from thought to thought (or worry to worry). Another problem when meditating is sleep. Here comes the advice of my friend, who was also a meditator. In the middle of the night, you say to yourself, “Great, this is the perfect time to meditate, because I won’t be disturbed to sleep.” Your mind that does not want to meditate will see that sleep is the lesser evil. Works like a champ for me.
