ARLINGTON, Texas – The long-awaited rematch between two of the best female boxers took place on one of the biggest stages of all time. The match served as the co-main event between headliners Jack Paul and Mike Tyson in the world boxing event.
Netflix reported staggering numbers, with 60 million households tuning in to watch the main event and 50 million for Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) and Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs). Tuning in to watch the epic battle between. . With 72,000 in attendance at AT&T Stadium, the match was the most watched women’s sporting event in history.
Amanda Serrano applied smart pressure and nearly scored a knockdown in the 1st round, stunning Katie Taylor with a hard left. Katie appeared to be affected by the punch for the first three rounds, she was somewhat stunned and still recovering from the punch. Getting off to an unusually slow start.
Katie was hesitant and cautious; It wasn’t until Serrano suffered a nasty cut over his right eye that Taylor began trading heavily with Serrano. The cut was the result of one of the many headbutts Taylor gave Serrano. The fight itself was a war, with the two fighters landing 1,263 punches between them. Amanda trailed Taylor, 324 to 217 respectively.
Landing 58.2 percent of his punches. Taylor’s face showed the brutality of Serrano’s punches in the post-fight press conference. Taylor needed stitches and had swelling over most of her face – showing swollen eyes, lips, nose and forehead.
Serrano suffered minimal damage with the exception of a nasty cut over his right eye. The two fought to a controversial decision, where Taylor was awarded a unanimous decision despite a point deduction for an excessive blow to the head in round 8. All three judges scored it 95-94 for Taylor.
Arguably, the first match seemed much closer than the second, as Serrano seemed to take an early lead. However, the controversial decision should not detract from a match between two great fighters who gave it their all. Neither of them shied away from showing the world why they are two of the best boxers in the world.
At the post-fight press conference, both promoters Eddie Hearn and Nikisa Bidaran expressed interest in a third match, expressing their desire for both Taylor and Serrano. If there is a third match, it should be just as great as the first two. Both have a fighting spirit and should be appreciated for their efforts. It is rare to see great fights, even rarer to see two between the same individuals.
