Greek Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis urged people on Santorini Island to “calm” after increasing seismic activity.
His remarks come when the schools were informed on Monday and the authorities advised not to gather in closed spaces throughout the island, a famous tourist destination known for its white buildings and churches with blue.
More than 280 earthquakes have been registered across the Greek islands during the past 48 hours, according to the earthquake laboratory at the University of Athens.
Hazings up to 4.9 in size Northeast Santorini was recorded on Monday, while an earthquake of 4.3 and 3.9 size was reported in recent days.
Speaking from the European Union talks in Brussels, the Prime Minister said that the country is working to manage a “very extensive geological phenomenon”, adding that he asked the authorities to make a “comprehensive presentation” of geological data, to ensure that everyone knows the scale of this seismic event.
Mitsotakis comments come where many people spent on Sunday night in the open air, amid fears of possible damage to buildings during earthquakes.
Some focal points of tremors were recorded at a depth of only 2 km (1.2 miles) below the surface.
Some residents chose to leave the island while seismic activity, including Kostas Sakavaras, a tourist guide who lived there for 18 years, and his wife and children.
“We decided yesterday to take the phrase and reach the mainland,” BBC News told BBC News.
“We stayed calm. It is not a big problem. It was more like, schools have been closed. We considered it better to come to the mainland as a preventive measure.”
He said they were in contact with the friends and family who remained, and that the tremors were “moderate”.
“Not anything fell, or anything like that,” he said, adding that the worst part was the sound.
“This is the most frightening part of it,” said Mr. Sakafaras, who is planning to return home as soon as schools reopen.
Santorini on what is known as the Hellenic Percentage Sagittarius – a series of volcanic islands created by the plate layers – but the last large eruption was in the fifties.
The Greek authorities said that the last small earthquakes were linked to tectonic platelet movements instead of volcanic activity.
The result of the tremors caused by a decrease in the Aegean sea plate under the African painting, causing the accumulation of resistance and friction along the rift line.
When the painting turns, the energy is launched in the form of an earthquake.
Earthquakes are very common in this region, but the authorities say that the activity in Santorini Caldera – the volcanic basin in which the island sits – remains a decline.
While the last tremors are believed to be unlikely to be an introduction to a volcanic explosion, this possibility cannot be excluded.
The tremors recorded by geology are a minor, but the authorities recommended a number of preventive measures in addition to the closure of schools, including demanding ships to avoid the Ammoudi and Fira ports.
Great trips ships are often established near the old port of Fira, where passengers are brought to the beach on smaller boats.
Schools were also asked to close in the Anafi, iOS and Amorgos Islands near, and will remain so until February 7.
On Monday, a message of emergency services was sent to the residents of Santorini, and urged them to leave the Ammudi, Armeni and old port due to the landslides.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismic Center, a total of more than 555 earthquakes have been registered since January 28 in the region between Amorgos and Santorini.
Costas Papazatos, a professor of geophysics at the University of Tsalonik Aristotle, told the public broadcaster ERT that precautionary measures “accurately to reduce the impact of a stronger earthquake”, where earthquakes cannot be predicted.
He added: “When you have a sequence next to you, this is alive, and very intense, you should be a bit cautious, specifically because there is always a risk of something like this.”
Earthquakes are measured on the MW scale (MW) – instead of the well -known Richter scale, which is now less accurate. The number attributed to an earthquake is a mixture of the distance driven by the rift line and the power that it conveyed.
Revereving 2.5 or less, but it can be discovered by tools. And for up to five perceived and cause slight damage.
Professor Papazachos said it was a simple earthquake in occurrence while people were collected in large crowds, as it may create panic that may lead to injury to people.
The Regional Fire Department in the South Free Aegean was placed on public rescue and rescue teams, as well as the regional commander to Santorini.
Various airlines added additional flights as people rushed to leave the island, and more phrases were published. Hotel owners report a series of cancellation in their reservations, as tourists avoid the island.
Although the island has a population of about 15,500 people, it welcomes millions of tourists every year.
