Mark Gorman in Bloomberg A. was released a report About Meta’s next steps in the hardware space, citing sources familiar with the company’s work. According to these insiders, Meta is developing at least three new models of smart glasses, and has laid out a roadmap towards launching the first true augmented reality glasses. The company is also reportedly continuing its efforts to implement AI tools in wearable wrist and in-ear headphones.
Meta already sells smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban, an in-house product line called Supernova. Gorman states that this current lineup will be introduced to new markets, though he did not provide details about where. Meta technologies are also applied to tires from other brands owned by its partner Luxottica Group. This will allegedly lead to the launch of glasses codenamed Supernova 2 based on Oakley’s Sphaera glasses. This group will be intended for cyclists and other athletes, and its camera will be placed in the center of the frames.
The third model is internally called Hypernova. This product will be another step closer to a true augmented reality experience, giving the wearer the ability to run simple software applications, view notifications, and view images captured by the device. The more advanced feature set will reportedly come at a more advanced price; Sources tell Gorman that this set is currently expected to cost $1,000. Insiders had already revealed last month that Meta was working on bringing a display to its Ray-Ban eyewear models.
Along with these smart glasses, Meta is also developing an AR product called . Gorman reported that the Orion collection would not receive a commercial release. Instead, he said, Meta plans to launch a different version of the hardware as early as 2027. That product is codenamed Artemis, and sources told Gorman that these prototype glasses are not as heavy as the Orion and are more advanced than their predecessor.
Another noteworthy item in Gorman’s report is that Meta is developing a wrist strap that can control its smart glasses. Most of the company’s models have temple controls, but the wrist option will be similar to the one used in the Orion prototype.
Finally, he confirmed that Meta is still working on prototypes of camera-equipped earbuds that could be a competitor to Apple’s AirPods. Information On this project in May 2024, the concept appears to have faced some development challenges. If these “Camerabuds” make it to market, they likely won’t for years.
