Agatha All Long The crowd-pleasing finale continued with one surprise after another. It also includes Agatha and Rio locking lips, and while it’s inspired by the plot (no, really!), Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza’s awesomeness was the ultimate in fan service. It was also historic, as it was Marvel’s first same-sex kiss between superpowered characters.
The MCU’s Biggest Kiss
Since the two appeared together on screen for the first time, Hahn and Plaza’s steamy chemistry was undeniable. However, the fact that each plays a sexy manipulator makes us not always sure if this chemistry will lead to a physical romance. But by the end, we get to see Marvel’s first gay kiss between powerful characters when Agatha willingly kisses Rio. The other woman is Death, and their passionate make-out session allows Agatha to sacrifice herself and save Billy’s life.
If you haven’t seen the magical last two episodes, you might need a primer on what led Marvel to kiss such history. In short, Rio has been secretly targeting Billy the whole time, mistaking him for a freak of nature for taking another life and planning to do the same to his brother, Tommy. She wants to restore balance, and since the cat needs to surrender itself to her willingly, Agatha makes a deal: she will provide the cat if Ryu stops hunting him.
Rio agrees, and when it looks like Agatha is going to save Billy’s life, she goes back to Plan A and prepares to sacrifice him. However, when the young man asks Agatha if this is how her own son died, she decides to surprise everyone by saving her own life. She makes Marvel history by smacking Rio, willing her death, and marking the first kiss between two super-powered female characters.
The first miracle is not a gay kiss.
Many are calling it the first gay kiss in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but strictly speaking, that’s not true. i Jessica JonesJeri Hogarth and former assistant Pam locked lips. Thanks to Agatha and Rio’s creation, there are now exactly two kisses between female characters. This perfectly matches the previous two kisses between the male characters: i eternal (Between Faustus and her husband) And me Agatha All Long (between Billy and high school boyfriend Eddie).
LGBTQ+ representation in the MCU
Now that Marvel has broken the seal on kissing superpowered women, we can’t help but wonder if we might see more same-sex romance on screen. For example, his sexuality wasn’t really addressed in the last Doctor Strange movie, but future appearances could allow America Chavez to be as proudly gay as his comic counterpart. And if Kevin Feige and crew are cool with more on-screen bisexuality, we could see potential future MCU heroes and villains (including X-Men characters Mystique and Psylocke) exploring their sexuality on screen.
While Agatha and Rio’s naughty moment may not be Marvel’s first same-sex kiss, it’s still the first between superpowered female characters. And whether you enjoyed it for some nostalgic reasons or for the plot, it was one of the MCU’s hottest moments. The road to Dine was long and winding, but scenery like this made the whole trip totally worth it.
