2 dead, 10 injured in twin shootings near New Orleans Second Line Parade

New Orleans police are investigating two shootings near a popular parade route Sunday afternoon that left two people dead and 10 others injured.

According to the police department, the first shooting happened in the 1800 block of Almonaster Avenue around 3:38 p.m.

Officers working the Nine Times Second Line Parade responded to the shooting in the area and found eight people who had been shot.

All eight victims were taken to a local hospital by ambulance, and the ninth victim arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle.

About 45 minutes later, officers responded to another report of shots fired at the intersection of Almonaster and Florida avenues. During the second incident, two people were shot, one of whom died on the spot and the other died after being shifted to the hospital.

A third victim of the second shooting showed up at the hospital and was in stable condition as of Sunday night, police said.

As part of the investigation, the parade was immediately shut down, police said.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick said at a news conference Sunday evening that the Nine Times Second Line is one of the largest second lines in the city, regularly drawing thousands of spectators.

Kirkpatrick said the police had a history “with this particular second line” and knew “there was a potential for violence,” so all 66 officers from the Fifth District, along with about 30 additional officers, were at the event. Assigned to work.

“It’s a great event. There’s no doubt about it, and we want to keep it a great event,” Kirkpatrick said.

Police have not yet identified any suspects or determined a motive behind the shooting. It is also not yet known whether the two shootings were related or not.

“The investigation is in its early stages and is still ongoing,” New Orleans police said in a news release.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced the shooting and condemned the violence in a post on X on Sunday evening.

“A tragic scene in the St. Roch neighborhood this evening. Sharon and I are praying for all involved and are thankful for the first responders who arrived on the scene. The violence must end.” He wrote.
